Introduction to the Branch
The South Bucks
Branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association has the sole
aim of serving all those in the area who are affected by Motor Neurone
Disease (MND). This includes people with MND, their carers, family and
friends.
MND is a progressively degenerative neurological disease that attacks the upper
and lower motor neurones, which are the nerves in the brain and spinal cord
which pass messages to the muscles telling them what to do. Degeneration of the
motor neurones leads to weakness and wasting of muscles, causing increasing loss
of mobility in the limbs, and difficulties with speech, swallowing and
breathing, yet the mind and senses remain largely unaffected. At the moment
there is no known cause, nor is there a cure.
We liaise with health and social care professionals such as Speech Therapists,
Occupational Therapists and the Medical Profession.
Our Branch holds regular support meetings for people living with MND
and their carers. These provide an opportunity to meet with other
people living with the disease, and to share experiences and ideas.
Fundraising and raising awareness are also very important aspects of
Branch activities, and we organise several events throughout the year.
The South Bucks Branch is run entirely by volunteers. We are always
interested in hearing from people who can help with events or who want
to get involved with running the Branch.
